To help understand the Sheet Metal Worker trade and prepare for challenging the Red Seal examination, this course contains the following sections which will be taught in the classroom as well as online :

  • Description of the Sheet Metal Worker trade: An overview of the trade’s duties, work environment, job requirements, similar occupations and career progression
  • Essential Skills Summary: An overview of how each of the 9 essential skills is applied in this trade
  • Pie Chart: a graph which depicts the national percentages of Sheet Metal Worker red seal exam questions assigned to the major work activities
  • Task Matrix and Examination Weightings: a chart which outlines graphically the major work activities, tasks and sub-tasks of this standard and their respective exam weightings
  • Industry Expected Performance: description of the expectations regarding the level of performance of the tasks, including information related to specific codes, regulations and standards that must be observed
  • Major Work Activity (MWA): the largest division within the course that is comprised of a distinct set of trade activities:
  1. Performs safety-related functions
  2. Uses and maintains tools and equipment
  3. Organizes work
  4. Uses communication and mentoring techniques
  5. Performs pattern development
  6. Fabricates sheet metal components for air and material handling systems
  7. Fabricates flashing, roofing, sheeting and cladding
  8. Fabricates specialty products
  9. Prepares installation site
  10. Installs and connects chimneys, breeching and venting to exhaust appliances and mechanical equipment
  11. Installs air handling system components
  12. Installs material handling system components
  13. Applies thermal insulation, lagging, cladding and flashing
  14. Performs leak testing, air balancing and commissioning
  15. Installs metal roofing and cladding/siding systems
  16. Installs exterior components
  17. Installs specialty products
  18. Performs scheduled maintenance
  19. Repairs faulty systems and components
