• Characteristics of COPD and asthma/COPD overlap (ACO)
• Non-pharmacological management and patient self-management of COPD
• Recommended maintenance therapies for patients with COPD
• Management of exacerbations in patients with COPD

Learning outcomes

After completing this module, you should have an improved understanding of:

• How spirometry is used for the diagnosis and assessment of COPD
• How to advise patients on managing their condition
• How patients with ACO can be identified, and what treatment is appropriate
• How treatment is escalated in patients who remain symptomatic
• What additional treatments are available for patients with exacerbations

Expert commentary is provided by:

Dr Robert Young, a Consultant General Physician at Auckland City Hospital and Associate Professor in the Faculties of Health and Medical Sciences and the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Auckland. Dr Young’s research and clinical interests focus on the primary prevention and early diagnosis of COPD and lung cancer.

Module questions have been developed by Dr Chris Tofield, who works in primary care skin cancer treatment and as a consultant to Research Review.
