  • Burden of illness associated with herpes zoster
  • A summary of treatment options for acute herpes zoster and postherpetic neuralgia
  • Clinical practice guidance for prevention of herpes zoster through vaccination
  • Clinical trial evidence for the two vaccines available for the prevention of herpes zoster

Learning outcomes

After completing this module, you should have an improved understanding of how to:

  • Determine the main risk factors for herpes zoster
  • Recognise manifestations of herpes zoster
  • Identify individuals who may benefit from systemic antiviral therapy
  • Determine which individuals are candidates for the two available herpes zoster vaccines
  • Understand the efficacy and safety of the two herpes zoster vaccines

Expert commentary is provided by:

Dr Stewart Reid, a semi-retired GP who has published extensively on vaccine issues and was involved in the first five editions of the Ministry of Health Immunisation Handbook.

Dr Rachael Niederer, an ophthalmologist with a strong interest in research, including involvement in the Zoster Eye Disease study.   

Module questions have been developed by Dr Chris Tofield, who works in primary care skin cancer treatment and as a consultant to Research Review.
