It discusses the 2020 Asthma and Respiratory Foundation NZ Adolescent and Adult Asthma Guidelines, and how these may be implemented in primary care. It is based on a Research Review Educational Series publication entitled “Simplifying Asthma Management in Primary Care”.

This E-Learning Module covers:
- Diagnosis of asthma, including assessment of control, severity, and future risk
- Management of asthma, including treatment algorithms and asthma action plans
- Treatable traits in patients with severe asthma
- Management of acute severe asthma
Learning outcomes
After completing this module, you should have an improved understanding of how to:
- Identify clinical features that increase and decrease the likelihood of asthma being present
- Identify high-risk patients who may require more intensive monitoring and supervision
- Use short-acting beta-2 agonist (SABA) therapy appropriately
- Decide if an increase or decrease of maintenance therapy is required
- Determine when a patient with a severe asthma attack should be referred to hospital

Professor Richard Beasley, a physician at Wellington Regional Hospital, Director of the Medical Research Institute of New Zealand, and Professor of Medicine at Victoria University of Wellington. He is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Otago and Visiting Professor, University of Southampton, United Kingdom. He is the Chair of the Asthma and Respiratory Foundation of New Zealand Adolescent and Adult Asthma Guidelines.
Module questions have been developed by Dr Chris Tofield, who works in primary care skin cancer treatment and as a consultant to Research Review.
