The Targeting Method
Historically electricians were taught to use the index in the back of the National Electric Code to find regulations. This method works but it is not the most efficient way to find things in the NEC. It is also not the way the NEC was intended to be used. The NFPA and the Code Making Panels have formatted the NEC in a simple and efficient manner that allows us to find information quickly. All we need to do this understand the format and use a simple method to efficiently find the information we need.
In this course, we will explain the format and also show you how to use the format. I call this method the Targeting Method.
Periodically I will refer to the NEC and will also ask you to try using the method so be sure to have your current edition of the NEC handy as you complete this course.
You may also want to take notes because there is a test at the end of the module that you will need to pass in order to get credit for completing the course.
Let's get started by looking at the history of the National Electric Code and the National Fire Protection Association.
