Tool and Die Maker, 430A, NOC 72101

To help understand the Tool and Die Maker trade and prepare for challenging the Red Seal examination, this course contains the following sections which will be taught in the classroom as well as online :

• Description of the Tool and Die Maker trade: An overview of the trade’s duties, work environment, job requirements, similar occupations and career progression
• Essential Skills Summary: An overview of how each of the 9 essential skills is applied in this trade
• Industry Expected Performance: description of the expectations regarding the level of performance of the tasks, including information related to specific codes, regulations and standards that must be observed
• Major Work Activity (MWA): the largest division within the course that is comprised of a distinct set of trade activities:

1. Performs safety-related functions
2. Uses and maintains machine-tools and tooling.
3. Organizes work
4. Performs benchwork
5. Plans and prepares for machine-tool operations
6. Operates conventional drill presses, lathes and milling machines
7. Operates power saws
8. Operates grinders
9. Operates computer numerical control (CNC) machines
10. Operates Electrical Discharge Machines (EDM)
11. Develops prototype
12. Proves out prototypes
13. Heat treats materials
14. Tests heat treated materials
15. Performs basic production tool design
16. Fits and assembles production tools
17. Proves out production tools
18. Repairs and maintains production tools
