FAQ
Can I - as Product Owner - do research myself to understand our target audience better?
Understanding our target audience plays a critical role in your role as PO
Understanding our target audience plays a critical role in your role as a Product Owner. If you know our audience, you can make well-informed decisions.
As a Product Owner, you'll have specific needs or target audience questions that you want to address to steer your roadmap. In that case, you can do research yourself. We don’t have a dedicated UX researcher. The complexity of the question determines the time investment required. Sometimes, these questions are small-scale, and other times they're more significant. Ultimately, you decide on the allocation, ensuring it remains manageable. The key principle is to ensure that the direction and next steps are clear for both development teams and other stakeholders.
Typically, you'll spend about 30% of your time on research, although this can vary depending on the nature of your research question.
What tools will I have access to as a Product Owner?
Here are the tools we currently use:
- Productboard: A web-based platform for managing feature requests and selections, which we use to shape our roadmap.
- Confluence: A web-based document management system for all our documentation, including our product plans, which we share with development teams.
It is up to you what you want to use! You can shape your work process!
What tools will I have at my disposal for research?
These are the tools we currently use:
- Condens: An online video transcription and research tracking tool handy for transcribing customer conversations and identifying trends.
- UXtweak: A tool for conducting anonymous client surveys and recording client interactions.
It is up to you what you want to use! You can shape your work process!
What training opportunities are available within the company?
We believe in learning through hands-on experience and stepping out of your comfort zone
Your personal growth is our priority. At our company, we believe in learning through hands-on experience and stepping out of your comfort zone. We encourage you to take on new challenges with guidance. We provide the time and space for you to explore and learn, especially during our designated playweek. Learning is seamlessly integrated into our process, with no pressure for immediate results. It's perfectly okay to make mistakes; we foster a safe environment for experimentation. Everyone here recognizes that mistakes are valuable learning experiences.
Additionally, you can attend courses, workshops, conferences, or collaborate with experts. Just submit a short proposal outlining why this is essential for your role, and we'll approve it! If you're interested in learning from colleagues in different disciplines, you can shadow them for a day. As a Product Owner, understanding support inquiries or engineers' workflows can be particularly insightful. Don't hesitate to spend time with them to enhance mutual understanding and knowledge exchange.
What type of team will I be a part of?
You'll essentially be fluid between teams. You'll closely collaborate with our two development teams, comprised of front-enders, back-enders, and implementation consultants. Several times a day, you have contact with them regarding the feature progress. You use those contact moments to verify ideas and clarify edge cases. Together, you'll shape the (technical) solution for your product idea.
You will also regularly work with our CEO, Jeroen, who previously served as a Product Owner and possesses a keen sense of product direction. He'll be there to give you a strong start during the initial months and will be your main point of contact whenever you're uncertain about the product’s direction.
Additionally, you'll collaborate with the content marketing team to determine product profiling strategies and with the COO, Caroline, for strategy alignment and continuous improvement.
Will I work remotely or in the office?
We enjoy the collaborative office environment, but we also support remote work. However, we expect you to be in the office occasionally, as it facilitates smoother collaboration. We prefer two days in the office, but we will not force you to come to the office when no one is there. Our logistical setup is designed to accommodate remote work seamlessly. We operate on a 'remote-first' policy, which entails:
- All important communication happens online via Slack.
- All documentation is online.
- Meetings are conducted online when >1 person are working remotely.
